Media Broadcasts That Stimulate Further Thinking
The December 1st, 1904 issue of the Watchtower made the surprise but welcome announcement that sermons by Brother Charles T Russell were to appear in three newspapers.
The next issue of the Watchtower, under the headline “Newspaper Gospelling” reported “millions of sermons have thus been scattered far and near and some at least must have done good. If the Lord wills we shall be glad to see this “door” keep open or even open still wider”.
The door of “newspaper gospelling” did open still wider.
In fact, by 1913 it was estimated that through 2000 newspapers, Russells sermons were reaching 15,000,000 readers!
In the early 1920s, a new instrument became available to give wide publicity to the Kingdom message.
The then president of the Watchtower Society, Joseph Rutherford felt strongly that “the hand of the Lord” was manifest in its development.
What was it?
Radio!
Less than two years after the world’s first commercial radio station began regular broadcasts (in 1920) Brother Rutherford went on the air to broadcast bible truth.
Here was an instrument that could reach millions of people simultaneously. Within 2 more years, in 1924 the Society had its own radio station, WBBR in operation in New York. By 1933, the peak year, 408 stations were being used to carry the kingdom message to 6 continents.
In addition to live broadcasts, programs on scores of subjects were pre-recorded and delightful Kingdom music was also featured prominently. These broadcasts broke down much prejudice and opened the eyes of honest hearted ones. Although not replacing the need for house to house witnessing, the radio was able to carry bible truth to places that were hard to reach, and provided excellent openings for conversations when witnesses personally visited the homes of the people.
By the 1960’s, TV was the main means of bringing a message to the masses, and the Watchtower Society wasted no time using this media to good effect.
In 1966 the half-hour film “Heritage” was broadcast by TV Networks across the USA. This was a fascinating modern day drama illustrating the many corrupting influences effecting young people and was narrated by Gilead instructor, Ulysses Glass … and was very well received.
TV has continued to be used extensively by the organization with numerous interviews with Watchtower representatives being broadcast on commercial stations and many documentaries about Jehovah’s Witnesses, often of a very positive nature have been broadcast over the years,
Full length interviews with JW celebrities often give an excellent witness and have included Hank Marvin, Teresa Graves and many others.
TV has also been used to discuss legal matters, court cases and other important events of the day affecting our brothers and sisters around the world … very often helping to set the record straight!
