In the early 1920’s a new instrument became available to give wide publicity to the Kingdom message.
The then president of the Watchtower Society, Joseph Rutherford felt strongly that “the hand of the Lord” was manifest in its development.
What was it?
Radio!
Less than two years after the world’s first commercial radio station began regular broadcasts (in 1920) Brother Rutherford went on the air to broadcast bible truth. Here was an instrument that could reach millions of people simultaneously. Within 2 more years, in 1924 the Society had its own radio station, WBBR in operation in New York.
By 1933, the peak year, 408 stations were being used to carry the kingdom message to 6 continents. In addition to live broadcasts, programs on scores of subjects were pre-recorded and delightful Kingdom music was also featured prominently. These broadcasts broke down much prejudice and opened the eyes of honest hearted ones. Although not replacing the need for house to house witnessing, the radio was able to carry bible truth to places that were hard to reach, and provided excellent openings for conversations when witnesses personally visited the homes of the people.
Jehovah’s Witnesses continue to make full use (where appropriate) of the World’s media, and spokes people representing the organization, regularly participate in Radio and TV broadcasts, presenting the work of Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Kingdom Message in a positive and appealing way.
